Rising Veterinary Costs Drive Surge in US Pet Insurance

Americans are increasingly adopting pet insurance as medical advancements and rising veterinary service costs push projected 2026 premiums to $6.4 billion.

Rising veterinary care costs and medical advancements are driving a significant increase in pet insurance adoption across the United States. Approximately 7 million pets were insured in 2025, representing a 9% increase from the previous year. This trend is expected to continue, with premiums projected to rise 17% to $6.4 billion in 2026.

Trupanion and other insurers report rising claims and subscription growth, fueled by the availability of sophisticated treatments such as chemotherapy, 3D-printed prosthetics, and specialized care from cardiologists and oncologists. While these advancements improve animal health outcomes, they also increase expenses. Veterinary service prices rose 4.6% as of September 2026, impacted by higher labor, shipping, and supply costs.

Animal health companies like Zoetis and IDEXX Laboratories have contributed to higher spending through the introduction of advanced diagnostic tools and medications for conditions such as osteoarthritis and allergies. Insurers note that the expanded capabilities of modern veterinary medicine create more care worth financing for pet owners.
