Peru and Mexico Restore Diplomatic Ties After Asylum Dispute

The Government of Peru and the federal government of Mexico restored diplomatic relations on August 7, 2026, ending a nine-month severance of ties. The dispute began after Mexico granted asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Betzabet Chávez Chino at the Mexican Embassy in Lima.

Under the terms of the restoration agreement, both nations agreed to grant safe passage to Chávez Chino in accordance with the 1954 Caracas Convention on Diplomatic Asylum. While Peru provided these guarantees to facilitate the resolution of the rift, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry clarified that safe passage does not terminate legal proceedings against the former official.

Chávez Chino has been convicted of conspiracy to commit rebellion and remains under investigation for illicit enrichment. Peru stated it reserves the right to seek her extradition if requested by judicial authorities.
