Major US Banks Report Mixed Third-Quarter Earnings Results

JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo missed revenue expectations while Goldman Sachs and Citigroup posted strong growth during a mixed start to the Wall Street earnings season.

Major U.S. financial institutions reported mixed third-quarter results on Tuesday, revealing a divergence in performance across the banking sector. Goldman Sachs exceeded analyst expectations with a profit of $5.29 billion, driven by a 72% surge in equities revenue and fees from the SpaceX initial public offering. Citigroup also saw strong growth, with total profit jumping 40% to $5.2 billion, marking its strongest third-quarter revenue in a decade.

In contrast, JPMorgan Chase reported a profit of $15.31 billion, missing Wall Street estimates of over $16 billion. The bank attributed the shortfall to a slowdown in investment banking, lower winnings from commodities and fixed income trading, and a $658 million loss on investment securities. Wells Fargo reported a 6% profit increase to $5.95 billion, beating per-share profit estimates at $1.87, but missed revenue expectations with $21.87 billion against a forecast of $22.31 billion.

Executives highlighted a complex economic environment. While business investment and consumer spending remain strong, leaders warned of risks including sticky inflation, high interest rates, and geopolitical instability. Wells Fargo noted that loan delinquencies remain low and deposit balances continue to rise, though the bank increased provisions for credit losses to $1.03 billion following the removal of a $1.95 trillion asset cap last year.
