India Industrial Production Grows 6.7 Percent in September
India reported a 6.7 percent year-on-year increase in industrial production for September, marking a slowdown from August growth and missing economist estimates.
India's industrial production grew by 6.7 percent year-on-year in September 2026, according to data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. This figure represents a slowdown from the 8.0 percent growth recorded in August and fell short of the 7.3 percent growth estimated by economists in a Reuters poll.
The Index of Industrial Production for September stood at 124.3, up from 116.5 in September 2025. Growth was primarily driven by the electricity and gas supply sector, which grew by 11.2 percent, and the manufacturing sector, which grew by 7.6 percent. Within manufacturing, electrical equipment saw the highest growth at 33.9 percent, followed by rubber and plastics products at 19.9 percent and motor vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers at 19.0 percent.
In contrast, the mining and quarrying sector contracted by 6.2 percent. As part of a technical update, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is transitioning to the output Producer Price Index as a deflator instead of the Wholesale Price Index for 234 item groups in the industrial production basket.
