Major Airlines Cut Capacity as Fuel Prices Surge

Major U.S. carriers, including United Airlines, American Airlines, and Southwest Airlines, are reducing flight capacity and cutting marginal, low-profit routes in response to spiking jet fuel prices. The price surge, linked to the war in Iran and Houthi attacks on oil infrastructure, has pushed fuel costs to $4.71 per gallon—more than double the price from a year ago and nearing a 20-year high.

United Airlines has already canceled several flights scheduled for December and may implement further cuts into 2027 to prioritize profitability and free cash generation over market share. The carrier expects approximately $6 billion in added fuel costs for 2026 and plans to pass 100% of these increases to passengers. American Airlines estimates that fuel costs will add $1 billion to its fourth-quarter expenses, noting that every one-cent increase in fuel prices raises quarterly costs by $10 million. Southwest Airlines has responded by cutting its planned 2026 capacity growth by roughly half.

To offset squeezed budgets, airlines have increased ticket prices, implemented elevated fuel surcharges, and raised checked baggage fees. International fares have reached or exceeded $2,000, while domestic costs have nearly doubled compared to two years ago. Despite these pressures, executives report that travel demand remains strong across premium and coach cabins. Chevron CEO Mike Wirth warned that industry buffers are exhausted and oil prices are unlikely to ease soon, while travel organizations like AAA are urging passengers to book holiday travel immediately to avoid further price hikes.
