Google Fixes AI Search Error Over 2020 Election Results
Google is addressing a technical gap in its AI Search mode that caused the tool to refuse to name the 2020 U.S. presidential election winner.
Google is fixing a technical gap in its AI Mode in Search after the tool repeatedly failed to identify Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Instead of providing a direct answer, the AI directed users to official reports from the National Archives and the Federal Election Commission.
This behavior contrasted with the company's standalone Gemini chatbot, which correctly identified the election winner. The company attributed the evasiveness to strict safety filters intended to prevent bias and misinformation on sensitive civic topics. The issue also affected queries regarding 2022 Senate races.
A spokesperson for the company stated that the system typically verifies recent election results using AP data or news articles. The error surfaced shortly before the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, coinciding with broader efforts by Meta and OpenAI to curb AI-generated election misinformation.
