AI-Generated Ebooks Displace Human Authors on Amazon

Researchers analyzing more than 14,000 ebooks sold on Amazon between 2023 and 2026 found that AI-generated content is displacing human authors in the digital book market. The data reveals a 19-fold increase in the number of books with sales, while total reader spending grew only ninefold. This imbalance has decreased revenue for the average title and caused a loss of market share for books containing no AI text.

Ed Newton-Rex, CEO of the nonprofit Fairly Trained, stated that this research invalidates arguments from AI companies that their training processes do not financially harm creators. The findings align with a previous conclusion by the U.S. Copyright Office, which determined that using copyrighted works to create commercial content that competes with the originals exceeds traditional fair-use boundaries. These results specifically challenge claims made by companies such as Anthropic regarding the impact of their model training on the creative economy.
