UN Extends LDC Graduation Deadline for Nepal and Bangladesh

The United Nations General Assembly unanimously extended the deadline for Nepal and Bangladesh to graduate from least developed country status until November 2029.

The United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted Resolution No. 81/L.8, extending the preparatory period for Nepal and Bangladesh to graduate from the list of least developed countries (LDCs) until November 24, 2029. Both nations, along with Lao PDR, were originally scheduled to graduate in November 2026.

Nepal and Bangladesh formally requested the postponement, citing economic vulnerabilities, geopolitical challenges, and global supply chain disruptions caused by conflicts in West Asia. The Government of Nepal specifically warned that an immediate transition could lead to the loss of duty-free and quota-free market access, potentially reducing employment in productive sectors by up to 35 percent.

The extension provides Nepal the necessary time to implement its Smooth Transition Strategy and the Doha Programme of Action. These measures are intended to ensure a sustainable transition from LDC status while mitigating the risks associated with the loss of international trade preferences.
