Palantir CEO Alex Karp Criticizes Proprietary AI Firms Over National Security
Alex Karp argues that Western governments must stop relying on proprietary AI firms and instead use software that ensures data control and national security.
Palantir CEO Alex Karp criticized the AI industry during a CNBC appearance, asserting that Western governments and militaries should not trust proprietary firms like OpenAI and Anthropic with sensitive data. Karp argued that token-based payment models leave clients without control over model weights, which he claimed risks outsourcing national security to a Silicon Valley consensus.
Karp accused these proprietary companies of selling technology to adversaries of the United States while refusing to collaborate with the U.S. military based on ethical grounds. He described the current state of industry trust and data handling as "effing insane."
To counter these risks, Palantir is positioning its platform as a software layer that allows enterprises to manage and switch between various AI models. This include utilizing Nvidia's open-source Nemotron models to ensure clients maintain control over intellectual property and data. While Palantir's commitment to U.S. military supremacy has caused France, Germany, and Spain to restrict or sever ties with the firm, Karp maintains that the company has an obligation to defend the nation.
