Google AI Now Generates 75 Percent of New Code

During the Google Cloud Next 2026 event in Las Vegas, Sundar Pichai announced that artificial intelligence now generates 75% of all new code at Google. This represents a rapid acceleration from approximately 25% in October 2024 and 50% in the fall of 2025. The AI-generated code, primarily powered by Gemini models and the internal development platform Antigravity, is suggested by AI and then reviewed, edited, or approved by human engineers.

Pichai detailed a transition toward agentic workflows, where engineers orchestrate autonomous digital task forces rather than writing code from scratch. He noted that this shift has already yielded significant efficiency gains, including a complex code migration project completed six times faster than previous human-only efforts. To ensure adoption, Google has integrated AI usage into its annual employee performance evaluation system, making these tools a requirement for engineers.

Other technology firms are pursuing similar trajectories. Meta targeted 55% agent-assisted code changes by the fourth quarter of 2025 and expects 75% of code in its creation organization to be AI-generated in 2026. Microsoft previously reported AI-generated code levels between 20% and 30% during the prior year.
