Silver Voices Urges UK to Raise Pensioner Tax Allowance

The campaign organization Silver Voices is calling on the UK government to increase the Personal Allowance for pensioners by at least £1,000 during the Autumn Budget on October 28. Supported by 216,614 signatories, the group argues that the current frozen tax-free threshold of £12,570 will cause more retirees to pay taxes as the State Pension rises under the triple lock mechanism.

With annual wage growth at 3.9%, the full new State Pension is projected to exceed £13,000 for the first time next April. Silver Voices maintains that the threshold must be raised and linked to future triple-lock increases to ensure that retirement income protections are not offset by higher taxes.

Minister for Pensions Torsten Bell responded by stating that the government intends to remove the administrative burden of paying small amounts of tax for those who only slightly exceed the allowance. He noted that further details on how this commitment will be delivered will be provided during the Budget.
