China and European Union Clash Over Automotive Trade Deficits

China and the European Union are engaged in tense trade negotiations over automotive exports and a 360 billion euro trade deficit.

The European Union and China are locked in tense trade negotiations centered on global economic imbalances and the automotive industry. The dispute follows a recent agreement to limit Chinese hybrid vehicle exports to the European market as the EU attempts to reduce a trade deficit that reached approximately 360 billion euros in 2025.

Chinese government agencies have adopted diverging tones during the talks. The Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China warned the EU not to "fantasize about gaining benefits by exerting pressure," asserting that the bloc should not underestimate China's capability to protect its interests. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China urged the EU to honor free trade commitments and avoid protectionist or discriminatory policies.

Despite the friction, the Ministry of Finance of the People's Republic of China expressed a willingness to cooperate on international economic governance and macroeconomic policy coordination. These discussions included meetings with European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde, and Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis.
