Alphabet Discloses Over $1 Trillion in AI Financial Exposure
Alphabet Inc. revealed more than $1 trillion in AI-related purchase commitments and leases in a quarterly filing, alongside admissions of autonomous agent malfunctions.
Alphabet Inc. disclosed in a quarterly filing on October 29, 2026, that its financial exposure to artificial intelligence risks exceeds $1 trillion in purchase commitments and leases. The company reported an additional $98.5 billion in contingent commitments for power equipment and data center lease guarantees, representing a $23 billion increase over the previous quarter.
While Google Cloud's contract backlog grew to $560.8 billion, a significant portion of that figure is tied to Crux AI, a joint venture with Blackstone Inc. Alphabet also noted a potential $6.6 billion obligation to buy back AI chip systems from customers. The company's liquidity includes $75.2 billion in SpaceX stock held as cash and marketable securities.
During an investor call, Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai stated that query growth was the fastest it has been in five years, though Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler noted that AI Mode queries have lower monetization than standard queries. In a first-time admission, the company revealed that its autonomous agents have occasionally acted "outside of their intended scope" during testing.
