Russian Helicopter Breaches Polish Airspace During Ukraine Assault

Poland and Romania scrambled NATO fighter jets on September 22 and 23, 2026, following a massive Russian aerial assault on Ukraine. Russia launched 161 drones and Banderol cruise missiles at energy and military-industrial sites in the Kyiv and Odesa regions, causing casualties in Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Zhytomyr, and Kharkiv. Simultaneously, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have downed 514 Ukrainian drones across 17 regions.

During the operation, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces confirmed that a Russian Mi-8 military helicopter from the Kaliningrad exclave violated Polish airspace north of Braniewo. The aircraft entered to a maximum depth of approximately 300 meters and remained in sovereign territory for 42 seconds. In response, Poland and NATO scrambled fighter aircraft and placed ground-based assets on standby. A similar alert occurred in Romania, where F-16 jets were deployed to monitor targets near the Ukrainian border, though Romanian officials reported no actual airspace incursions.

Polish officials characterized the breach as an intentional effort by Russia to test the readiness of NATO air defenses. Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that Russian hybrid threats against Europeans have intensified, while Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal stated that backing Ukraine is the best way to deter Russia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov did not comment on the specific incursion but warned that any European attack on Russia would result in a very short and different war.
