Juliana Stratton Wins Illinois U.S. Senate Seat

Democrat Juliana Stratton won a decisive victory in the Illinois U.S. Senate race, defeating Republican Don Tracy to succeed retiring Senator Dick Durbin.

Democrat Juliana Stratton won a decisive victory in the election for the open U.S. Senate seat in Illinois, defeating Republican Don Tracy and independent candidate Whitfield Harrington Jr. Early returns showed Stratton leading with 66.3% of the vote, compared to 32.3% for Tracy and 1.4% for Harrington. Stratton, the current lieutenant governor and a former state representative, becomes the second Black woman to represent Illinois in the U.S. Senate.

Stratton ran on a progressive platform that included the abolition of ICE, a $25 federal minimum wage, and the implementation of Medicare for All. She also proposed raising taxes on individuals earning over $1 million annually to provide tax cuts for middle- and working-class citizens. Her candidacy received significant support from Governor JB Pritzker, who contributed $10 million during the primary.

Republican challenger Don Tracy, a former chair of the Illinois Republican Party, criticized Stratton and Pritzker for increasing state taxes, fees, and the annual budget by more than 50% over the last seven years. Stratton's victory maintains Democratic control of the seat in a state that has elected only one Republican senator this century. She is scheduled to take office in Washington, D.C., on January 3, succeeding Senator Dick Durbin.
