Serbian Police Kill Knife Attacker at Israeli Embassy
Serbian authorities killed a minor who attacked the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade, prompting the government to raise the national terror threat to the highest level.
A Gendarmerie officer killed a minor in self-defense after the assailant attacked the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade with two knives shortly after midnight on Wednesday. The officer sustained slight facial wounds during the encounter.
Ivica Dacic, the Serbian Interior Minister, characterized the incident as a terrorist attack. He reported that security agencies had been monitoring the attacker, a resident of Sabac, who allegedly supported the Islamic State. Dacic noted that the assailant "kept the black flag in support of the Islamic State on his Instagram."
In response to the attack, the Government of Serbia raised the national terror threat to the highest level and increased security at key locations. The incident occurred during a government transition following a parliamentary election in which former President Aleksandar Vucic was defeated by a youth-led movement. This event follows a similar attack in June 2024, when guards killed a crossbow attacker at the same embassy.
