Starbucks Explores Potential Takeover of Chipotle Mexican Grill
Starbucks has reportedly worked with advisers to develop a proposal to acquire Chipotle Mexican Grill, the chain previously led by CEO Brian Niccol.
Reports indicate that Starbucks has explored a potential takeover of Chipotle Mexican Grill. The move would reunite Starbucks Chief Executive Brian Niccol with the burrito chain he led for six years before joining the coffee company in 2024.
Starbucks has reportedly worked with advisers in recent months to develop a takeover proposal. While Chipotle has a market capitalization of nearly $39 billion, the company has recently faced rising food and labor costs alongside softer consumer traffic. Analysts suggest the acquisition could allow Chipotle to accelerate international expansion by leveraging the extensive licensed partnerships Starbucks maintains in Europe.
Following the report, Chipotle shares rose approximately 6%, while Starbucks shares declined by about 3%. Neither company has officially commented on the matter.
