Ireland Fuel Prices Surge as Excise Duty Cuts End

Fuel prices in Ireland rose sharply in August, driven by global wholesale market conditions and turmoil in the Middle East. According to analysis from AA Ireland, diesel prices increased by 11 percent, or 19 cents, to an average of €1.92 per litre. Petrol prices rose 5 percent, or 9 cents, to an average of €1.84 per litre. For motorists filling a 50-litre tank, these changes added €9.50 to the cost of diesel and €4.50 to petrol compared to July.

These August increases occurred while excise duty remained constant, as the government had extended temporary reductions through August 31. These reductions included a lowered NORA levy of 27 cents for petrol and 32 cents for diesel.

Costs are expected to climb further starting September 1, when the Government of Ireland begins a phased restoration of these temporary excise duty cuts. This initial phase will add 9 cents per litre to petrol and 10 cents to diesel. AA Ireland warned that if wholesale prices remain steady, motorists should anticipate continued increases throughout the autumn rather than expecting August to be the peak.
