U.S. Embassy Backs Private Investment in Liberia Agriculture
The United States Embassy in Monrovia reaffirmed support for expanding American private-sector investment in Liberia's agricultural value chains to boost food production and job creation.
The United States Embassy in Monrovia reaffirmed its support for expanding private-sector investment in Liberia's agricultural sector during a meeting on August 3, 2026. Chargé d’Affaires Joe Zadrozny and Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah focused on increasing American investment in priority value chains, specifically cocoa, coffee, rice, rubber, maize, and cassava.
This engagement signals a strategic transition in the bilateral partnership, shifting from traditional development assistance toward trade and investment. Current U.S. efforts include poultry production and a proposed commercial dairy operation.
To address Liberia's annual rice import bill of approximately $200 million, a partnership launched in April 2026 with California-based partners aims to develop 50,000 hectares of rice fields. This initiative utilizes technology transfer from the University of California to improve domestic food production and reduce reliance on foreign imports.
