Yemeni Government Forces Launch Massive Strikes Against Houthi Positions
Yemeni government forces intensified airstrikes and counterattacks against Houthi militants in Taiz and near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait to break a devastating siege.
The Government of Yemen intensified military operations against Houthi militants through a series of airstrikes and ground counterattacks centered in the besieged city of Taiz and the surrounding countryside. As part of the Dawn of Yemen campaign, government forces conducted 753 strikes over a 24-hour period ending Sunday, targeting fortifications, troop concentrations, and command centers. In a broader 24-hour window, the Yemeni Armed Forces reported 1,392 operations that neutralized 620 militants and destroyed 190 vehicles.
In Taiz, government forces targeted a Houthi command-and-control center and two tanks located in the abandoned Sofitel Hotel, which officials claimed the militia used to target civilians. These strikes follow a severe Houthi siege and shelling campaign. The Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedoms documented 1,891 violations between September 1 and October 22, including the deaths of 212 civilians and the displacement of 280,000 people. The monitor reported that Houthis fired nearly 10,000 projectiles and converted five schools into detention centers.
On other fronts, the Southern Giants Brigades and National Shield forces repelled a 30-hour Houthi offensive near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait at the Kahboub front, while an ambush in Lahj stopped further militant advances. Military spokesperson Col. Majed Al-Nuzaili stated that the offensive disrupted the militia's supply capabilities and movement, asserting that forces are limiting targets to legitimate military objectives to protect civilians.
