Nigeria Launches Framework to Block Non-Compliant Mobile Devices
The Nigerian Communications Commission implemented a new compliance framework to block fake and non-compliant SIM-enabled devices from connecting to national telecommunications networks.
The Nigerian Communications Commission launched an enhanced Type Approval Compliance framework on October 7, 2026, to block fake, cloned, and non-compliant hardware from connecting to telecommunications networks. Announced during a media briefing in Abuja, the initiative targets SIM-enabled devices including smartphones, tablets, modems, IoT devices, cellular laptops, and point-of-sale terminals.
The framework utilizes electronic verification to ensure devices meet technical and regulatory standards, a process supported by the Nigeria Customs Service to authenticate newly imported hardware. While devices connected to local networks before the October 7 launch are automatically verified, the commission urges buyers of new or second-hand devices to verify IMEI numbers before purchase. Users can check their device's approval status by dialing *315# or using the official NCC Device Checker website.
Addressing privacy concerns, the commission clarified that the system is designed for regulatory verification and device identification rather than surveillance. The agency asserted that the framework does not grant access to personal communications, photographs, messages, contacts, financial information, or user location data.
