Equatorial Guinea and Gabon Sign Agreement to Resolve Territorial Dispute

The Republic of Equatorial Guinea and the Gabonese Republic signed a Joint Engagement Agreement in Addis Ababa to implement a May 19, 2025, judgment by the International Court of Justice regarding a territorial dispute. The agreement establishes a formal framework for the peaceful resolution of the conflict based on international law and good faith.

The signing took place on the sidelines of the 49th Ordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council. The African Union Commission hosted the ceremony and provided facilitation through Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Special Envoy Albert Shingiro. Representing their respective nations, Equatorial Guinea's Minister of Foreign Affairs Simeon Oyono Esono Angue and Gabon's Constitutional Court President Dieudonné Aba’a Owono signed the document.

Officials from both nations characterized the agreement as a demonstration of mutual trust and responsibility. The African Union Commission stated that the deal reflects a shared commitment to dialogue and the peaceful resolution of disputes in the spirit of African unity.
