Alberta Prepares for Referendum on Canadian Confederation

The province of Alberta is preparing for an October 19 referendum that asks voters whether to remain in Canada or hold a second, binding vote on leaving Confederation. Elections Alberta has published the locations of more than 1,400 polling stations and hired over 28,000 staff members to manage the event. Mail-in ballot requests have surged to more than 610,000, an increase of 90,000 since last Friday.

As the vote approaches, advocacy groups have intensified their efforts. Forever Canadian, led by former deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk, has transitioned to a direct advocacy campaign urging Albertans to vote to remain in Canada. This shift requires the group to submit weekly financial disclosures to Elections Alberta as a third-party advertiser.

The move follows accusations from Cory Morgan, founder of the pro-separatist group Pathway to Independence. Morgan claimed Forever Canadian previously avoided financial transparency and skirted campaign rules while distributing lawn signs and holding events. Lukaszuk denied these claims, stating the group has always complied with the law and that regulators previously determined their activities did not constitute campaigning on a specific question.

Advance voting will run from October 13-17 at 310 designated polling stations. Mail-in ballots must be returned by 5 p.m. on October 16 to be counted.
