Germany and Netherlands Establish Joint NATO Command in Baltics

Germany and the Netherlands will establish a joint tactical headquarters in the Baltic region this year to command forces on NATO's eastern flank, bolstering the alliance's deterrence posture against Russia. The command center, designated 1GNC (German-Netherlands Corps), will operate specifically in Estonia and Latvia and can control up to 50,000 troops.

The new headquarters will assume primary responsibilities including planning military exercises, preparing for potential conflicts, and leading forces in the event of war. The 1GNC is currently headquartered in Münster, Germany, and remains under German command until early 2028.

This deployment provides NATO with a second corps command in the Baltic region, supplementing the existing headquarters in Szczecin, Poland. The addition increases NATO's operational capacity and response speed along its vulnerable eastern border, where the alliance has sought to strengthen its posture following Russia's aggression in Ukraine.

The establishment of the 1GNC tactical headquarters reflects a broader NATO effort to enhance cohesion and rapid mobilization capabilities in the Baltics, where small allied states border Russia and its ally Belarus. By positioning a command structure capable of directing tens of thousands of troops directly in the region, Germany and the Netherlands aim to reduce response times and improve coordination between allied forces stationed on the eastern flank.
