India Withdraws Notice of Bangladesh Prime Minister's Visit
The Rashtrapati Bhavan retracted a notice regarding a ceremonial welcome for Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman amid extradition disputes over deposed leader Sheikh Hasina.
The Rashtrapati Bhavan issued and then quickly withdrew a notice on August 21 and 22, 2026, regarding the cancellation of the weekly Change of Guard Ceremony in New Delhi. The initial suspension was intended to allow for rehearsals for a ceremonial welcome for Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The sudden reversal of the notice suggested uncertainty surrounding the planned diplomatic visit.
The Ministry of External Affairs of India provided no updates on the trip, and A A M Saleh, the press secretary for Tarique Rahman, confirmed that no decision had been made regarding the visit. The diplomatic tension stems from the government of Bangladesh seeking the extradition of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other fugitive criminals from India to create propitious circumstances for the visit.
Sheikh Hasina, who was sentenced to death in absentia for her role in a crackdown on student protests, has denied the charges. The retraction of the official notice indicates that the extradition dispute remains a significant hurdle to the Prime Minister's travel to India.
