Google Cloud Expands AI Data Center Infrastructure in India
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian announced plans to host AI models locally and expand data center footprints across India over multiple years.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian announced during a visit to Mumbai that the company will host its latest artificial intelligence models locally to support data sovereignty. This strategy is part of a multi-year plan to expand the company's AI-ready data center footprint in India, building upon a previously announced $15 billion investment for a 1GW facility in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
To sustain this growth, Google Cloud is establishing a specialized hub of forward-deployed engineers in India to service customers across the region and Asia. Kurian identified India as the company's largest business in Asia, noting high adoption of the Gemini Enterprise platform among major Indian firms in the finance and healthcare sectors.
Google Cloud is also exploring the manufacturing of AI servers and remains open to integrating third-party AI models, such as Anthropic's Claude. The company intends to leverage its full-stack integration of chips, models, and infrastructure to compete against rivals Microsoft and Amazon.
