Anthropic CEO and Founders Pledge 80% of Equity to Charity

Dario Amodei and six Anthropic co-founders pledged 80% of their personal equity to philanthropic causes ahead of the company's upcoming IPO.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, and six other co-founders have pledged to dedicate 80% of their personal equity in the company to philanthropic causes. According to a recent SEC filing, each founder holds over 200 million shares. These holdings could be worth billions of dollars, as the company's valuation is expected to exceed $1 trillion before its initial public offering next month.

Amodei is managing his contributions through donor-advised funds, specifically the Dechomai Asset Trust and the Daffy Charitable Fund. A provision in the filing allows Amodei to retain voting rights over the shares pledged to these funds, a detail that may prompt debate over tax deductions and charitable control.

Anthropic has further committed to matching billions of dollars in share donations made to charity by its employees. Amodei expressed sadness over a cynical attitude among wealthy tech individuals who view philanthropy as fraudulent or useless.
