Forbes Fires Chief Content Officer Over Secret $6 Million Payment

Forbes fired its chief content officer and top editor, Randall Lane, in July 2026 after discovering he secretly accepted a $6 million payment from RJ Shook, the founder of Shook Research. Shook Research has partnered with Forbes since 2016 to produce co-branded rankings of wealth advisers, a relationship that generates revenue for both entities through the sale of profiles and commemorative plaques.

The payment occurred after Shook sold a majority stake in his company to the private equity firm PPC Enterprises in August 2025. PPC Enterprises discovered the transaction while reviewing company email correspondence following the acquisition and subsequently flagged the payment to Forbes.

Lane characterized the money as a personal gift for advice he provided to Shook over several years. However, the payment violated internal policies prohibiting employees from accepting undisclosed compensation or benefiting from company business dealings. Lane admitted the payment in July and acknowledged that failing to disclose the gift was a serious error in judgment.

Executive editor Kerry Lauerman has replaced Lane on an interim basis.
