Tokio Marine Targets Suncorp for Multibillion-Dollar Acquisition

Tokio Marine is pursuing a multibillion-dollar acquisition of Australian insurer Suncorp to diversify its global operations in cooperation with Berkshire Hathaway.

Tokio Marine is pursuing a multibillion-dollar international acquisition to diversify its operations, with Australian insurer Suncorp emerging as the preferred target. The strategy follows a March agreement with Berkshire Hathaway, which acquired a 2.5% stake in the Japanese insurer to cooperate on large-scale mergers and acquisitions outside Japan.

To identify a target, the company conducted due diligence on several firms, including Canada's Intact Financial Corporation and Australia's Insurance Australia Group. While Intact was deemed too large for the acquisition, Suncorp became the primary focus. Suncorp shares rose more than 7% on August 25 following reports of the interest.

Chief Executive Masahiro Koike is driving the diversification effort to expand the company's global footprint while preserving capital for domestic investment. The plan intends to combine the operational expertise of Tokio Marine with the balance sheet of Berkshire Hathaway. Tokio Marine has declined to comment on the market speculation.
