Russia Deploys Jet-Powered Drones in Infrastructure Attacks on Ukraine

Russia is using high-speed jet-powered drones to target Ukrainian infrastructure, prompting Kyiv to develop AI-guided interceptors to counter the faster aircraft.

The Federal Government of Russia has deployed a new generation of jet-powered drones based on Iranian Shahed models to attack Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions. These aircraft travel at hundreds of kilometers per hour and fly at altitudes that make them difficult to detect and intercept using traditional machine guns or existing air defense systems.

The strikes target critical infrastructure, including energy systems, telecommunications, railways, and grain exports. These attacks increase pressure on Ukraine's dwindling supply of interceptor missiles. Volodymyr Serdiuk, a commander of an air-defense unit, noted the difficulty of the task, stating that the drones move so fast that units cannot get a proper lock on them.

In response, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine is overseeing the development of faster interceptor drones equipped with jet-propulsion systems and artificial intelligence. While some new interceptors have successfully struck targets, current Ukrainian models reaching speeds of 300 to 400 kilometers per hour remain insufficient against the latest Russian jet-powered drones.
