Charlie Hatcher Defeats Andy Ogles in Tennessee Republican Primary

Former Tennessee agriculture commissioner Charlie Hatcher defeated two-term incumbent Andy Ogles in the Republican primary for the Fifth Congressional District on Thursday. Hatcher's victory comes after a competitive race for a redrawn district that spans from Nashville suburbs to parts of Memphis.

Hatcher's campaign received an endorsement from outgoing Governor Bill Lee and significant financial backing from the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition. The super PAC, funded by renewable energy developers, spent $2 million to support Hatcher and penalize Republicans hostile to the industry. Tom Matzzie, chairman of the coalition, stated the result proved that standing in the way of the energy future comes with a political price.

Ogles entered the race with the endorsement of Donald Trump and several conservative groups but faced scrutiny over campaign finance issues and inflammatory anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant rhetoric. He accused the renewable energy industry of attempting to buy the seat during the campaign. The Fifth District is considered a safely Republican seat, and the winner is expected to face Democratic candidate and Columbia Mayor Chaz Molder in the general election.
