YouTube Launches AI Tool to Detect Creator Deepfakes

YouTube launched an AI-powered likeness detection tool to help creators in the YouTube Partner Program identify and remove unauthorized deepfakes featuring their faces and voices. The tool allows eligible users to review auto-flagged videos via a dedicated dashboard in YouTube Studio, where they can request removals based on privacy or copyright guidelines, or choose to archive the content.

To activate the feature, creators must verify their identity by submitting a government-issued photo ID and a selfie video, which are stored on Google servers. This rollout follows a pilot program conducted with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA) in December 2024. The platform warned that the tool is still in development and may occasionally flag authentic videos that feature the creator's actual face.

The initiative targets the rise of AI-generated scams and misinformation, such as fraudulent advertisements used to impersonate celebrities and influencers. This effort is part of a broader strategy that includes mandatory labels for realistic AI-generated videos, strict policies on AI music styles, and updated monetization rules to discourage inauthentic content. YouTube also expressed support for legislative efforts to regulate digital replicas, including the NO FAKES Act and the Take It Down Act.
