Chinese Humanoid Robots Break Records at Beijing Conference

Beijing recently hosted the World Robot Conference and the World Humanoid Games, where Chinese firms demonstrated significant leaps in humanoid physical capabilities. A robot named Lightning, developed by Honor, ran 100 meters in just over 9.3 seconds, surpassing the world record held by Usain Bolt. Other machines broke high jump records and performed complex domestic tasks, including folding laundry and preparing espresso. UBTECH Robotics also showcased humanoids featuring lifelike skin and blinking eyes.

Despite these achievements, the events were marred by technical instability, with some robots experiencing convulsions or catching fire. These failures highlight a gap between physical performance and reliable utility.

Parallel to the exhibitions, Unitree Robotics listed on the Shanghai stock exchange with a valuation exceeding $50 billion. Unitree founder Wang Xingxing acknowledged the physical progress but argued that the industry has not yet reached a mass-market inflection point. He suggested that a moment of daily utility similar to the impact of ChatGPT could be a decade away.
