SADC Deploys Observers for Zambia General Elections

Malawian President Peter Mutharika, serving as Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, called for calm, tolerance, and peace ahead of Zambia's general elections on August 13, 2026. He urged eligible voters to exercise their democratic rights peacefully to determine the country's leadership.

To ensure the polls remain free, fair, and transparent, SADC deployed the SADC Electoral Observation Mission, which consists of more than 100 observers. The mission aims to monitor the credibility of the electoral process as the nation heads to the polls.

The election features incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema, who is seeking a second term based on his record of debt restructuring and economic reforms. Opposition parties are challenging the administration, focusing their campaigns on the rising cost of living.
