U.S. Embassy Accuses China of Cyberattacks in Pacific Islands
The United States Embassy in Suva accused China of sponsoring cyberattacks against foreign governments and telecommunications networks across the Pacific Islands region.
The United States Embassy in Suva accused China of sponsoring malicious cyber activity targeting telecommunications networks, multilateral organizations, and foreign governments throughout the Pacific Islands. U.S. officials specifically reported a suspected network compromise of a regional organization based in Suva between July and August 2026, alleging that hackers linked to China maintained access for several days to steal sensitive communications.
The Government of China rejected these claims through its embassy in New Zealand, characterizing the allegations as politically motivated disinformation designed to sow discord in the region. Chinese officials asserted that the United States is the world's largest hacking empire and maintained that China combats hacking activities in accordance with the law.
In response to the reports, Fiji's Minister for Policing and Communications, Ioane Naivalarua, stated that the government is monitoring the situation. He urged both the public and private sectors to harden their digital security to protect against such threats.
