President Tokayev Convenes Kazakhstan's New Unicameral Kurultai Legislature

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev opened the first session of the first convocation of the Kurultai on August 28, marking the formal launch of Kazakhstan's new unicameral legislature. The assembly replaces the former bicameral Parliament under a new Constitution that took effect on July 1. During the opening session, Tokayev stated that the adoption of the People's Constitution established a legal foundation for a new political and legal system designed to modernize state structures and expand citizen participation.

The 145-member body was formed following the first parliamentary election under the new framework on August 23. Five political parties cleared the 5% statutory threshold to secure seats. The Adilet Party won the largest share with 110 seats, followed by the Auyl People’s Democratic Patriotic Party with 10, Respublica with nine, and the Aq Zhol Democratic Party and Nationwide Social Democratic Party with eight seats each. The People’s Party of Kazakhstan and the Baytaq Green Party failed to enter the legislature.

Tokayev emphasized the historic responsibility of the new deputies, noting that they must follow the mandates of voters and serve the interests of the state. He characterized the transition as part of a new era of prosperity following a nationwide referendum and large-scale constitutional reforms.
