Chris Bryant Mediates Drumcree Parade Dispute in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Bryant stated that a resolution to the Drumcree parade dispute is tantalisingly close following mediation talks at Hillsborough Castle. The standoff intensified after a court of appeal overturned a high court injunction that had banned the Orange Order from marching through the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road area, ending a 28-year ban previously upheld by the Parades Commission.

The Garvaghy Road Residents’ Coalition indicated it would accept a proposed resolution document provided the Orange Order also agreed to the terms. While the Orange Order maintains that the law of the land must be enforced, First Minister Michelle O’Neill visited the area to express support for the community's opposition to the march.

Chief Constable Jon Boutcher has launched a criminal investigation into unlawful blockades preventing the parade, warning against mob rule. The dispute centers on the route from Drumcree church through the Garvaghy Road neighborhood, where Orange Order members have staged protests.
