China Opposes U.S. Ban on Chinese AI Services
China's Ministry of Commerce demanded the United States revoke a directive banning federal civilian agencies from using artificial intelligence products and services from Chinese companies.
The Ministry of Commerce of China expressed strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition on October 20, 2026, after the United States government ordered federal civilian agencies to stop using artificial intelligence products and services from Chinese companies. The U.S. directive cited national security concerns and allegations regarding the theft of trade secrets as the primary drivers for the restriction.
Chinese officials characterized the ban as a discriminatory act that overstretches the concept of national security and abuses administrative means to suppress Chinese enterprises. The ministry argued that these measures disrupt commercial cooperation in the AI sector and harm the legitimate rights of Chinese companies.
China has urged the United States to revoke the restrictive measures and implement the consensus previously reached by the two heads of state. The ministry further called for the use of the existing China-U.S. AI dialogue mechanism to resolve the dispute.
