India Maintains Economic Resilience Amid Middle East Tensions

India reports steady growth and strong private investment in FY27 despite global macroeconomic uncertainties and inflationary pressures linked to the Iran-US conflict.

The Ministry of Finance and several financial institutions report that India's economy remains resilient during the first quarter of FY27, underpinned by strong domestic fundamentals and government policy. In its July 29 Monthly Economic Review, the ministry attributed this stability to structural reforms and strategic initiatives in shipbuilding, critical minerals, and Semicon 2.0. The Reserve Bank of India has projected a 6.6 per cent GDP growth for FY27 while maintaining a policy repo rate of 5.25 per cent.

Data from Ernst & Young and Kotak Institutional Equities highlight a recovery across the services, manufacturing, and construction sectors. Central capital expenditure rose 13.4 per cent during April-May FY27, and industrial credit expanded by 18 per cent by May 2026, signaling a broad-based pick-up in private sector investment in electronics, electricity, and chemicals. Additionally, merchandise exports grew 15.5 per cent in June.

Despite these gains, analysts caution that global instability—specifically the Iran-US conflict—poses risks to crude oil prices and inflation. Consumer price inflation rose to 4.4 per cent in June, exceeding the central bank's 4 per cent target. While the Ministry of Finance noted that the Gulf standoff creates upside risks for deficits and inflation, Kotak Institutional Equities suggests that economic and political compulsions will likely prevent a prolonged conflict.
