Microsoft Records $24.1 Billion in AI Sales From OpenAI

Microsoft Corp. disclosed that it recorded $24.1 billion in sales from OpenAI during the fiscal year ending in June. This figure represents more than half, and potentially up to 70%, of Microsoft's total artificial intelligence revenue for the period.

Under their existing agreement, OpenAI pays Microsoft for computing power, model-building costs, and a share of its revenue. While the financial data suggests OpenAI's contribution is a minority of Microsoft's total corporate revenue, it constitutes the majority of the company's AI-specific sales growth.

Microsoft has attempted to reduce this dependency by backing Anthropic PBC and developing internal models. However, the disclosure highlights the company's continued reliance on OpenAI to drive its AI growth. Satya Nadella stated the company was on pace for $37 billion in revenue by the end of the March quarter.
