Bulgaria Records EU's Sharpest Annual Fuel Price Increase

Bulgaria recorded the steepest annual increase in fuel and lubricant prices in the European Union for August 2026, with a 34.5% rise compared to August 2025. Data from Eurostat shows this surge significantly exceeded the EU average increase of 23.8%. On a monthly basis between July and August, Bulgaria's diesel prices jumped 13.5%, trailing only Czechia for the highest increase in the bloc.

The Government of Bulgaria responded to the crisis by announcing a support package exceeding 300 million euros. The measures include removing the excise duty on LPG and providing financial aid to farmers, households, and public, school, and medical transport services. While the government attributes the hikes to conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, parliamentary opposition claims the benefits primarily favor wealthy grain producers.

Recent market data shows diesel prices reached an average of 1.93 euros per liter by September 17, with some stations hitting 2 euros. Energy expert Martin Vladimirov noted that consumers are paying a markup of roughly 20 euro cents per liter because wholesalers reference the Mediterranean market despite domestic supply exceeding demand by 20-30%. In further response, the Bulgarian Parliament voted to lift the ban on exports of petroleum products, including diesel and aviation fuel, to the EU. The Commission for Consumer Protection has launched inspections to determine if the price hikes are economical.
