UK Government Reviews BBC Funding as Licence Fee May Rise
The Government of the United Kingdom is reviewing the BBC funding model as forecasts suggest the licence fee could reach £202.60 by 2031.
The Government of the United Kingdom is reviewing the funding model for the British Broadcasting Corporation ahead of the Royal Charter's expiration at the end of 2027. New forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility indicate the television licence fee could rise to £202.60 by 2031. This projected increase follows an expected decline of 2.7 million paying households over the next five years, leaving approximately 19 million payers as audiences shift toward streaming services.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy is evaluating several alternative funding options, including household levies, advertising, subscriptions, or extending the licence fee to streaming services. The government plans to detail these proposals in a white paper before Christmas.
In response to the financial pressure, BBC Director General Matt Brittin is implementing a £500 million savings plan. This cost-cutting measure may result in the loss of up to 2,000 jobs.
