United States Celebrates 250th Anniversary with National and Local Events

The United States marked its 250th birthday with fireworks in Washington and local celebrations across Florida and Pennsylvania amid extreme heat and storms.

The United States celebrated its 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026, with a major fireworks display at the National Mall in Washington and various regional festivities. In Florida, thousands of residents gathered at Bayfront Park in Sarasota for downtown fireworks, while AAA reported that over 4 million people traveled across the state, peaking in congestion between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

In Pennsylvania, the America250PA Berks County Committee and the Reading Symphony Orchestra hosted the Star-Spangled Spectacular at the Berks County Fairgrounds in Bern Township. The event featured music from the Let’s Dance Orchestra and readings of the Declaration of Independence by Senator Judy Schwank and Representative Mark Gillen. Despite stormy weather forcing the cancellation of fireworks and extreme heat affecting attendees, organizer Charles Bock confirmed the celebration was funded exclusively by local businesses.

Safety and weather challenges persisted throughout the holiday. West Palm Beach Police warned citizens against illegal celebratory gunfire, and fire officials in Boca Raton investigated a blaze that destroyed the Sophia Loren Salon. Palm Beach County remained under a heat advisory, with indices reaching 110 degrees and scattered storms throughout the day.
