Amazon and AEP Partner for Indiana Nuclear Plant

Amazon, American Electric Power, and X-energy signed an agreement to evaluate a 960-megawatt advanced nuclear power plant in Sullivan County, Indiana.

Amazon partnered with American Electric Power and X-energy to evaluate the construction of a 960-megawatt advanced nuclear power plant in Sullivan County, Indiana. The proposed facility would utilize 12 Xe-100 small modular reactors sited at the former Breed Generating Station, a retired coal plant brownfield.

Under the Joint Development Agreement, Amazon will provide milestone-based development capital and intends to purchase the power through a long-term contract. This arrangement is designed to cover costs and operations so that expenses are not passed to American Electric Power customers. The project aligns with a broader collaboration between Amazon and X-energy to add at least 5 gigawatts of nuclear capacity to the U.S. grid by 2039.

A final decision on the project is expected by late 2029, pending feasibility studies and federal regulatory approval of the reactor design. Governor Mike Braun has supported the initiative through state policies aimed at SMR deployment and economic growth.
