North Dakota Republicans Block Childcare and Data Center Bills

North Dakota House and Senate Republicans blocked two Democratic-led bills during a special session in Bismarck. The proposed legislation sought $9 million in additional funding to address a waitlist of nearly 1,900 families seeking state childcare assistance and a brief pause on the development of data centers.

Senate Majority Leader David Hogue prevented a vote in the Senate, citing the requirement for a unanimous vote to consider bills not previously forwarded by the Legislative Management Committee. House Minority Leader Zac Ista criticized the Republican opposition, arguing that legislators should be accountable to their constituents for refusing to debate the issues.

Governor Kelly Armstrong dismissed the political nature of the session during his State of the State address. He stated that priority should instead be placed on preventing drug overdoses rather than making political statements.
