India's Dhanteras Trade Exceeds Rs 1 Lakh Crore

The Confederation of All India Traders reports nationwide business topped Rs 1 lakh crore on Dhanteras, with gold and silver sales alone reaching Rs 60,000 crore.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) estimated that nationwide business exceeded Rs 1 lakh crore on Dhanteras, November 6, 2026. Gold and silver sales contributed more than Rs 60,000 crore to this total, representing a 15-20% increase in value over the previous year. This surge was driven largely by rising gold prices, which reached approximately Rs 1.42 lakh per 10 grams, rather than increased volume.

Industry bodies including the All India Gem & Jewellery Domestic Council and the All India Jewellers and Goldsmith Federation reported a shift in consumer behavior. To manage elevated costs, buyers increasingly gravitated toward lightweight 14-carat and 18-carat gold jewellery, silver coins, and versatile designs. This trend was particularly noted among young working professionals. Growth was strongest in rural and semi-urban markets, as well as Tier II and III cities, fueled by improved liquidity and the upcoming wedding season.

Regional reports highlighted significant activity across India. In Nashik, jewellery business rose 20% to Rs 110 crore, while the Tricity region saw a 30% surge in sales. In Chandigarh, the festive rush extended beyond jewellery to the automobile sector, with 835 vehicles registered in a single day. CAIT projects that total festive trade from Navratri to Diwali will surpass Rs 7 lakh crore, a 15-18% increase over the previous year.
