President Nicușor Dan Nominates Siegfried Mureșan as Prime Minister

President Nicușor Dan nominated Member of the European Parliament Siegfried Mureșan as Romania's prime minister on September 17, 2026, following marathon consultations at Cotroceni Palace. Mureșan accepted the nomination and has 10 days to form a cabinet and secure the 233 parliamentary votes required for a vote of confidence.

The appointment follows a protracted political crisis that began on May 5, when Parliament dismissed the government of Ilie Bolojan. Since then, Romania has been governed by an interim executive after two previous nomination attempts by President Dan—Eugen Tomac and Adrian Vestea—failed to secure a majority. The deadlock has pressured Romania's investment grade rating ahead of a scheduled Standard & Poor’s review on October 2.

Mureșan is supported by the National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR), and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), though these parties hold significantly fewer than the 233 seats needed. The Social Democratic Party (PSD), led by Sorin Grindeanu, expressed disappointment and will not support the candidacy, while the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) refuses to back any government in which it is not included.

Prime minister-designate Mureșan is currently drafting a governing program focused on being reform-oriented and pro-European. If he fails to secure a parliamentary majority, President Dan may nominate another candidate or dissolve Parliament for early elections.
