Ladakh Leaders Weigh Attendance at New Delhi Home Ministry Talks

The Ministry of Home Affairs has scheduled a sub-committee meeting in New Delhi for September 9, 2026, to continue negotiations with Ladakh leaders over democratic representation and constitutional safeguards. The talks follow a May 2026 session where the government reached an in-principle agreement to grant the Union Territory an elected body with legislative, financial, and executive powers, as well as safeguards similar to Article 371 A, F, and G.

Despite the invitation, the Leh Apex Body (LAB) has called an emergency meeting in Leh to determine if they will participate. Some leaders argue that the High Powered Committee, led by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, should convene instead to reach a final decision.

The LAB and the Kargil Democratic Alliance are demanding the finalization of a draft proposal based on the May agreements. Additionally, they seek the unconditional withdrawal of legal cases stemming from a September 2025 incident. Gelek Phunchok, convener of the LAB, has emphasized that the government must honor its commitments through concrete outcomes and a time-bound resolution.
