Violent Anti-Government Protests Erupt in Tirana

Prime Minister Edi Rama refuses to resign as youth-led protests in Tirana escalate into violent clashes with police and political infighting.

Anti-government protests in Tirana escalated into violent clashes on Saturday as demonstrators attacked the Council of Ministers building with stones and Molotov cocktails. The unrest, which has persisted for nearly 20 days, is driven by youth-led demands concerning corruption, job prospects, and education costs. Law enforcement used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds.

Edi Rama, the Prime Minister of Albania, has refused demands for his resignation and the establishment of a transitional technocratic government. He asserted that the large-scale street protests pose a threat to the country's progress toward European Union membership rather than his own government's stability. The European Commission condemned the violence and called for adherence to the rule of law.

Internal divisions emerged among the demonstrators during clashes outside the Ministry of Education. Students formed a human cordon to block lawmakers and supporters from the Democratic Party of Albania, attempting to keep the movement focused on student-specific demands and separate from political party influence. While Democratic Party supporters chanted for the government's removal, some protesters called for the imprisonment of both Prime Minister Rama and opposition leader Sali Berisha.
