Sam Altman Admits AI Industry Failed to Communicate Public Benefits

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admitted that the artificial intelligence industry, including his own company, has done a "terrible job" of communicating how AI benefits ordinary people. Speaking in response to comments made by Treasury Secretary Scott Bastian at the G20, Altman stated that the industry failed to explain how the technology can provide individuals with more autonomy and creativity.

Altman argued that current messaging has either focused on "doom" or relied on high-level promises, noting that "I don't think a cure for cancer is enough." He emphasized that the industry should instead highlight how AI can enable a boom in utility and entrepreneurship.

While acknowledging that the world should remain concerned about AI risks, Altman suggested that public fear often stems from a perception that AI leaders do not want users to have more power. He stated that the goal of the technology should be to ensure people have more power and autonomy.
